The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Series on BBC
The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."
The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.
Fresh Obstacles for AC-12
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Series Legacy
The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.
The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
