New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
