International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Recovery for Bodies of Captives in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official stated that its personnel joined members of Hamas into zones of Gaza currently controlled by IDF authority to facilitate the search for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Truce Terms and Hostage Remains Handover

Under the US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on 10 October, the group is obligated to return the bodies of all Israeli hostages promptly. As a reciprocal measure, the Israeli government has consented to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far returned the remains of 15 of those held captive but zero in the past five days, as a portion of those bodies are thought to be in locations beyond the ceasefire boundary marking the temporary truce line.

Red Cross Role as Impartial Facilitator

“At the request of the parties, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) joined a party to the conflict as the group looked for the bodies of the deceased individuals beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” stated a spokesperson for the committee.

She added: “The parties to the hostilities established the modalities of the mission and entrusted the ICRC to act as a impartial mediator. The ICRC was had no part in those negotiations.”

She further clarified: “Our team was did not participate in the search for the deceased nor does it take part in the retrieval of remains.”

When the two-day window neared, Hamas, accompanied by the ICRC, joined teams from Egypt, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to search for remains beyond the line marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside the territory. An official representative said the Egyptian team would use heavy machinery and trucks in the search.

This development was corroborated by an source within Israel, who told Hebrew-language media that Hamas representatives had been allowed to access areas of Gaza under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to look for the bodies of hostages, together with Egyptian and Red Cross personnel.

The search for the bodies of individuals taken captive has become one of the most sensitive issues in the truce reached between the parties. Yet, the effort to locate the bodies has been challenging from the outset, given the presence of an approximate 60m tonnes of debris across the strip, where, according to health officials, at least ten thousand residents are listed as unaccounted for, buried under the debris.

Diverging Statements on Body Whereabouts

Hamas has stated it does not know the precise whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has lost contact with several of its units that had been holding the hostages and were reportedly eliminated during Israeli bombardments.

However, an official representative asserted that the organization was aware of the whereabouts of the bodies. “If Hamas made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our captives,” the spokesperson said.

US Stance and Weapons Surrender Discussions

While the American leader has conceded that a portion of the bodies are difficult to reach, he said that “the rest they can return immediately and, for unknown reasons, they are failing to do so.”
