France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the UK.

The change in policy comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader urging him to support the initiative and saying there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.

French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.

French police have infrequently intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both officers and civilians.

"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."

Currently, a French maritime police representative says officers will start taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.

Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to snarl the engines of the vessels.

This determination to take action at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official left government.

This was demonstrated in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.

Now French authorities will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up migrant passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.

Powerful gusts are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking methods to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.

UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
