The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block visible behind helped us verify the footage.
Our team is verifying images and video posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the images originated was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
