American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their duties without pay.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by weather and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to hear their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, can I secure an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.
