Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
