A comprehensive search and recovery operation is presently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated boats transporting humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Rescue Missions Initiated

The Mexican government has deployed naval teams and military search aircraft to find the missing boats, which were transporting no fewer than nine total sailors, according to a navy statement.

The ships had been expected to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, the navy said.

The Situation of Aid to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the nation struggles through widespread nationwide blackouts.

"Both captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and each boat are outfitted with proper safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy commented.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Recent Aid Mission

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the country.

That ship, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, baby formula, bikes and food.

Wider International Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led efforts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.

The United Nations have since highlighted "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy tensions have increased over the past months, with remarks from several representatives emphasizing the delicate nature of diplomatic ties.

Responding to previous comments, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to find the boats and secure the security of the crews.

As of now, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
